Tobacco Use Disorder: The Neglected Addiction

This workshop will examine the benefits of tobacco cessation in improving depression, anxiety, affect and overall psychological quality of life and improvements in long term abstinence rates from alcohol or illicit drugs. Evidence based strategies, including a guideline-based brief intervention of 3 minutes will be explored.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

Most people have heard of First Aid and CPR to address physical distress, but what happens when someone is exhibiting signs of emotional or mental distress?

The Alaska Training Cooperative (AKTC) is providing the community with a groundbreaking public education program Mental Health First Aid that helps the public identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. Mental Health First Aid is an interactive eight-hour course funded by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority that teaches participants about the risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems and provides an overview of treatment resources and options.

National Certificate in Employment Services (NCES)

The National Certificate in Employment Services (NCES) concentrates on practical employment strategies for people with disabilities and provides an overview of significant disabilities, practical strategies for career development, job development and job support, and rehabilitation issues/current trends. This class (or equivalent certification through bi-annual testing through ACRE) is required by the State of Alaska in order to become a Community Rehabilitation Services Provider (CRP).

Basic Concepts of Care Coordination

The Illusion of Perfection: Learning to Get the Recognition That Counts

The emphasis of this training will be working with the fruitless striving for constant perfection and the ease in which perceived failure can lead to addictive behaviors. Topics such as understanding addiction as an effort to fill the insatiable hole will be explored in depth.

Traditional Health Based Practices (THBP)

Participants are provided with foundational information on traditional lifestyles and health practices of people living in Alaska prior to western contact. They will be introduced to beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge of health promotion and maintenance that were practiced, and will examine major changes leading to the current health status of the Alaska Native community. Special emphasis is placed on strategies for improving behavioral health.
